This is an easy to whip up recipe and if you’re camping it’s easy to take the egg mix, spread, and some berries with you. Just toast the bread on a cast iron over the fire and eat this amazing breakfast. They key to instantly amazing French toast is thick bread. Regardless is type of bread you use, 1/2" to 3/4" thick is ideal. The second thing to set your French toast apart from everyone else's is to use a liberal amount of butter on the pan to fry it.

What bread is best for French toast

Many restaurants use Challa bread but any bread from a local bakery is best. Most common is thick cut white bread. In the end it is up to you and what your preference is. If you are wanting something easy store bought Texas toast will do just fine.

How long should bread soak for French toast

If you have the time soak your bread until it has the liquid mixture all the way through each slice. For thick slices of bread this could take around 20 minutes. For thinner slices it could take 1-2 minutes.

How long does it take to cook French toast

The time it takes to cook your French toast will depend on how thick your bread is. Typically you can cook it on medium to low heat for about 4 minutes per side. The out side should develop a good crust while the inside is still soft. However if you press on the bread and the liquid still squishes out it, you need to cook longer and possibly on lower heat so that the crust doesn't burn.

4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 

1 tablespoon maple syrup

4 drops maple extract

1 tablespoon sugar

1 loaf crusty bread of choice

4 eggs

1 cup heavy cream

Zest and juice of half an orange

¼ teaspoon vanilla

¼ teaspoon nutmeg

¼ teaspoon cinnamon

2 tablespoons dark brown sugar

Pinch of salt

Instructions

Step 1

To prepare the batter, add everything into a bowl and whisk together until incorporated.

Step 2

Slice your crusty bread between ½ inch thick to ¾ of an inch thick, and soak the bread in the batter for a minute or two, before placing on a well-buttered cast iron pan to cook.

Step 3

Monitor while cooking, cook for a few minutes, flipping mid way through.

Step 4

When plating the French Toast try spreading the cream cheese mixture onto the top, cover it with fresh berries and drizzle it with maple syrup. You can hit it with some powdered sugar or whipped cream if you’d like a more dessert feel.

Cream Cheese Spread

Step 1

Set your cream cheese out long enough to ensure it is room temperature, so it will be easier to mix.

Step 2

Add it to a bowl along with the syrup, extract and sugar. Mix well with a fork.
