9th Day of Christmas: Fried Pink Lady Apples
On the ninth day of Christmas Camp Chef made for me a caramel apple fries. Tell those dancing ladies to take a seat and make room for these deep fried apple slices served with the most delicious caramel dipping sauce.
- For the Apples
- 5 Pink lady apples, peeled, cored and sliced
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- 1 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 2 Tablespoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- Peanut oil for frying
- Additional cinnamon and sugar for sprinkling on top
- For the Dip
- 8 ounces of cream cheese, softened
- 1 small container cool whip (or 1 cup whipping cream with 1/2 cup sugar - whip until stiff
- 1 cup caramel sauce
For the Apples:
In a fry pan, heat oil to 350 degrees F.
In a large bowl, mix together buttermilk and sugar.
Peel and slice apples and add them to the buttermilk mixture.
In a shallow dish, add flour, cinnamon and sugar and mix together. Pull the apples out of the buttermilk mix, one at a time and lightly coat all sides in the flour.
When the oil has reached temperature, place coated apples into the oil so they are not touching. Fry until golden brown. Quickly remove to a tray lined with paper towels to soak up excess grease and cool. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar while they are hot.
For the Dip:
Mix together the cream cheese and cool whip until completely blended, then stir in the caramel sauce. Place into bowl for dipping and drizzle extra caramel sauce on top.
