Setup and Curing

Due to the nature of lava rocks, some rocks may need to "cure" before a lifetime of enjoyment. To do this, simply setup the firepit and ignite on high, allowing it to "bake" the rocks for about 10 minutes. During these few minutes, maintain a safe distance while a small portion of the rock may, or may not, crack and gently pop. After 10 minutes, the rock will be cured and setup complete.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great portable fire! We bought this little fire pit before a trip through Yellowstone. It was nice having a fire where no wood fires were allowed! It is compact enough that we keep it in the fifth wheel all the time. Its really easy to set up and take down. It puts off a ton of heat and you can get some pretty good flames by strategically placing the lava rock before firing it up. It takes about 15 minutes for the lava rock to start glowing, but its worth the wait for the heat off the lava rocks. It started raining this last weekend while camping and we got it out and set up chair under our trailer awning and had a nice hot fire in less than 5 minutes. I prefer a real fire, but this has defiantly earned a place in my camp.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well for the price Have had this unit for 4 years now, I modified it to hook up to the quick connect. Compact so it's convenient for my small RV. Sits low to the ground, wish it was taller. Good flame although that uses a good amount of gas, I usually use it about mid point. It takes a couple minutes for the best flame and also to get rid of the gas smell. The lava rocks are kind of dirty but the travel case contains the mess well when you put it away. I use the unit on my patio mat close to or under the edge of the awning. There is pretty much no heat under the unit so no worries about what's under it. It also cools pretty quick so I can slide it under the front of the trailer shortly after turning it off. Great for returning from evening fishing, get back in the dark, light the fire, cook a few dogs, sit around for an hour, put it out, go to sleep. I give it only 4 cause I'm sure there are nicer sexier units out there, but this one really does work just fine.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Flimsy gas connector breaks off The brass gas petcock is about 3/8 brass and extends out far so it is prone to breaking off. When it breaks the burner and valve assembly both needs replacing. Not worth the money to repair. I have many of Camp Chefs products for many years and I love most of them but this is poorly designed.
