If you are looking for a fun, simple, family fun activity to do for thanksgiving look no further!  These cupcakes are very easy to make and are the perfect addition to any fall get together.  These cute turkey cupcakes would also make the perfect activity for the kids on thanksgiving.  Plus it would be a great way to keep them entertained during football!

One idea on how to implement the activity would be preparing the cupcakes prior to thanksgiving and then have a decorating party on Thanksgiving Day.   Start by setting up all your decorating supplies on a table.  Then let the kids dive in and go crazy frosting and decorating their cupcake.  They will have a blast decorating and assembling their own individualized turkey while getting a sweet treat in the process.

The best part about making these cupcakes is eating them.  They are absolutely delicious and jam packed with my two favorite cookies Oreos and Nutter Butters!  Could there be anything better?

Below are the ingredients and instructions you need to make theses darling little gobblers!


  • 1 Box of Chocolate or Vanilla cake mix
  • 1 Box of Double Stuffed Oreos (Has to be double stuffed, because you will be inserting the candy corn into the cream filing to make the turkey’s tail)
  • 1 Box of Large Nutter Butter Cookies
  • 1 Can of Chocolate Icing
  • 1 Tube of White Decorators Icing
  • 1 Tube of Red Decorators Icing, or Red Food Coloring
  • 1 Bag of Plain M&M’s
  • 1 Bag of Original Candy Corn
  • Zip Lock Bags or Pasty Bags with Decorator Tip


For the Turkey’s Tail

  • You will need 1 Oreo and 6 candy corns per cupcake.
  • Push 6 pieces of candy corn into the cream filing of the Oreo cookie.  Insert the white tip of the candy corn into the cream filling.  You want the larger part of the candy corn to be on the outside making the turkey’s tail.  Fan the candy corns around 2/3 of the cookie.

For the Turkey’s Body

  • You will need 1 Nutter Butter cookie, 2 brown M&Ms, and 1 yellow M&M per cupcake.
  • With the white decorators icing make 3 large dots.  Two on top and one in the center below the previous two dots.
  • Insert 2 brown M&M’s in the top two white dots of icing, for the turkey’s eyes. (See  Above Photo)
  • In the middle lower dot insert a yellow M&M sideways into the icing, for the beak. (See Above Photo)
  • Add a gobble next to yellow M&M with the red decorator’s icing.  (If you do not have red decorators icing, use red food coloring to dye the white icing).   To add the gobble, place the red decorators icing into a ziplock bag and cut off the tip, or use a pastry bag with the tip in place. Form the gobble by squeezing the red icing smaller at the top of the yellow M&M and larger at the bottom of the M&M. (See Above Photo)

You have now assembled everything you will need to make the turkeys! Set these aside and prepare the cupcakes.

  • Remove the cupcakes from the oven and let them cool
  • Once the cupcakes have cooled completely, frost them with the chocolate icing.

***TIP: Make sure to use a large amount of icing per cupcake.  The icing needs to be thick enough for the cookies (Turkey’s tail and body) to stay in place once inserted.

  • Once you have finished frosting all of the cupcakes, insert the Oreo portion of the turkey (Turkey’s tail) into the icing toward the back of the cupcake.  It may be necessary to push the tail into the actual cupcake to keep it in place.
  • And Wah-la!  You have now completed the cutest Thanksgiving cupcakes that will put a smile on anyone’s face!

These cupcakes were a blast to make, and so simple to create.  The cast iron muffin pans worked perfect for cupcakes.  The cupcakes came out golden brown, and evenly cooked.  Since the cast-iron pan is non-stick the cupcakes were very easy to remove, allowing for easy clean-up.  The turkey portion of the cupcake was very easy to create and assemble.  The kids will definitely enjoy making these on Thanksgiving Day, and I will absolutely be adding this recipe/activity into my Thanksgiving traditions each year!
