FAQ's on Propane and Natural Gas

Q: Can I convert my Camp Chef stove to operate on natural gas?
For instructions on converting a Camp Chef stove to natural gas, see the instructions for the NGKIT. Click Here »
Q: Does the stove performance change if I use natural gas instead of propane?
Yes, the output will decrease by about 25% due to the lower heat content of natural gas. That is, a 30,000 BTU/hr burner will operate at about 22,500 BTU/hr.
Q: How can I increase the output of the burner when using natural gas?
The stove control valve has within it an orifice (small hole) which is sized to allow the right amount of propane to get to the burner. To get the same amount of heat content from natural gas as propane, this orifice must be increased in size by drilling out the hole using a number 45 drill (0.082 inches). This will allow the right amount of natural gas to reach the burner for full output.
Q: If I drill out the orifices can I use the stove with propane?
We do not recommend it. The larger orifices will supply too much propane to the burner when the control valve is wide open and this can cause flame instability.
Q: If I convert my stove to operate on natural gas, how can I convert back to operating on propane?
The best way is to buy and install a new control valve. In that way you will be supplying the right amount of fuel to the burner.
