  • Gift Guide for the Emergency Prepper

Who Says a Present Can't be Practical?

Do you have a prepper on your Christmas list this year? Whether they’ve been collecting emergency prep supplies for years or they’re just starting out, you can help them add a few items this season. Camp Chef stoves, ovens, and water heaters will be welcome additions to any prepper’s collection—you might want to snag one for yourself while you’re at it. Read on to see some of our favorite emergency prep gift items.

    1. Outdoor Oven

The portable Outdoor Oven is beloved by preppers everywhere because of its versatility. In the oven, you can bake all the comforts of home, from cinnamon rolls to your grandmother’s bread recipe. On the top, the two burners allow you to boil water or grill food. In one portable cooker, you can pretty much do it all.

    2. Butane One Burner Stove

When it comes to portable power, there’s no match to our Butane One Burner Stove. The fuel canister fits within the stove, so it’s easy to bring anywhere. The single burner puts out about 8,000 BTU, which is comparable to your kitchen stove at home. This is a great item for single preppers who would only need to cook for a couple of people at one time.

    3. Explorer Two-Burner Stove

If your prepper has quite a few people in their family, they might want something a little bigger than a single burner stove. Our Explorer Two-Burner Stove has been setting the standard for outdoor cooking for years. The removable legs and folding windscreen make this stove easily portable, while two 30,000 BTU burners let you cook whatever you want and boil water with ease. All you need are a few cast iron dishes, a griddle, or any other stove accessories to complete the system.

    4. Hot Pot

One of the most important parts of emergency preparedness is ensuring access to clean water. The Hot Pot is the perfect way to boil mass amounts of water at one time. The aluminum construction makes it lightweight, and the pour spout is convenient for drinking and washing.

    5. Stryker Stove

If you’re interested in a 72-hour kit emergency preparedness gift, then the Stryker Stove is the way to go. It is small, incredibly lightweight, and ready to go wherever you need it. With the unique heat ring technology, the stove uses fuel more efficiently and boils water faster. This is a great gift to add to a backpack of MREs.

    6. Portable Water Heater

Who says you can’t be comfortable in an emergency? The portable water heater is an excellent way to enjoy a hot shower, even in the middle of nowhere. It runs off of propane, so you can use the same fuel for your stove and your water heater. Your emergency prepper probably hasn’t thought of adding something like this to his or her collection, but it’s sure to be a hit gift.

Give a gift this year that’s as practical as it is fun. Choose one of the items above, or start shopping for other emergency prep equipment now.

  • Family Camping Gift Guide

Does your family eat, sleep, and breathe the outdoors? Are camping trips a summer highlight every year? Or maybe you’ve never taken that family camping trip, but this year you’re finally going to make it happen. Whether you’re experienced or brand new to camping as a family, we have a few ideas of what Santa should put under the tree this season.

    1. Pro 90

This is the ultimate family stove. With three powerful burners and a variety of accessory options, you can fry bacon and eggs for breakfast and polish off a few hot dogs and burgers for dinner at the campsite. Hey, you could even bake a couple of pizzas. Meet the demands of all the picky eaters in your family, and enjoy the great outdoors at the same time.

    2. Griddle

Camping isn’t quite camping if you don’t get to wake up to an early-morning pancake breakfast. Our pre-seasoned steel griddle is perfect for cooking pancakes to that perfect golden brown, to say nothing of bacon or eggs. Fall in love with campsite breakfast.

    3. BBQ Box

For a more classic camping trip, make sure you bring along a BBQ box. You can grill up burgers, brats, corn on the cob, and more. All you need is a bag of buns and condiments, and you’ve got yourself one of the easiest camping meals around.

    4. Pizza Oven

Ever thought of eating pizza out at camp? Now you can! Additionally, you can bake things like cookies, cinnamon rolls, or other sweet treats that your kids will love. The oven itself fits easily into a carry bag, so it’s perfect for car camping. Your family won’t soon forget the time they got to eat pizza under the stars.

    5. Dutch Oven

Do you have a lot of mouths to feed? There’s no easier way to cook a lot of great food at one time than with a Dutch oven. You can make cobbler, cheesy potatoes, soup, and more. Whatever the meal, there’s a Dutch oven recipe for it. Plus, cast iron is really easy to clean and maintain, so you don’t need to drag a bottle of soap around the campsite to wash your dishes.

    6. Propane Fire Pit

If you can’t find a campsite that allows open fires, or if your idea of camping includes the backyard, you can get your family a propane fire pit. These are approved at most campsites with fire restrictions, and they’re perfect for the patio too. You get all the warmth and marshmallow-melting power of a wood fire without any of the ash and smoke. What’s not to love?

    7. Roasting Sticks

Speaking of campfires, you’ll want to grab a set of roasting sticks for your family camping trip. They’re ideal for marshmallows, hot dogs, and whatever other crazy treats you’ll be roasting over the flames.

    8. Pocket Puffs

If you want to switch out the tried-and-true s’more for something new, you should pick up a few Pocket Puffs. These little roasting irons can make miniature aebleskivers, small Danish desserts that are more delicious versions of donut holes. It’s an easy recipe, and you can do it right over your campfire. That sounds like a family tradition in the making.

  • Get the Most Out of Your Turkey Cannon

With Thanksgiving only a week away (where did November go?), it’s all hands on deck for the big feast. We have all the gear, tips, and tricks you need for a smooth holiday. That means cast iron for your pies and rolls, a pellet grill for smoked turkey and extra oven space, and one of our favorite products, the Turkey Cannon. When our customers see the Turkey Cannon, their first question is invariably: “What is that thing?”

To be fair, you probably haven’t seen many turkeys cooked this way. It’s Thanksgiving’s best kept secret. The concept is simple.

If you’ve ever had Beer Can Chicken, our Turkey Cannon Infusion Roaster works in much the same way. With a liquid of your choice in the center tube, the Cannon roasts turkey from the inside out. This keeps the moisture locked into the meat, and it cuts your cooking time nearly in half compared to the traditional oven method. At last, you could be eating on time on Thanksgiving afternoon.

So if you’re ready to transform your Thanksgiving this year, read on to learn how to use the Turkey Cannon.

    Our Best Tips

    1. Set up the Turkey Cannon inside a roasting pan. The turkey drippings will accumulate here, and you can use them for delicious gravy later on.

    2. Fill the tube with a liquid (and any seasonings) of your choice up to the first hole. Some of our favorites are apple cider, cranberry juice, chicken stock, and cooking wine. The flavor of the liquid doesn’t affect the turkey meat very much—you’ll want to choose your liquid based more on what type of turkey gravy you’ll want (if you’re using the drippings).

    3. Lightly spray the Cannon with cooking oil before placing the turkey. This will prevent bits of food and seasoning from sticking, making your clean-up easier.

    4. Mount a cleaned and prepped turkey onto the center tube. If your bird is 10-18 lbs., place it breast-side up. If it’s any bigger than 18 lbs. (we recommend a maximum size of 20 lbs.), place it breast-side down.

    5. If you cook your turkey breast-side down, remove it from the turkey cannon and roast it breast-side up for the last 20 minutes or so of cooking. This will give you a nice, browned finish on the breast.

    6. Rub the turkey with butter, oil, seasoning, etc. of your choice. Separate the skin slightly from the meat so you can spread some seasoning underneath.

    7. Because of the incredible moisture of cooking with a Turkey Cannon, brining beforehand is optional. Whether you do so or not, your bird will be tender and juicy.

    8. For best results with the Turkey Cannon, you should smoke your turkey in a SmokePro pellet grill. However, the Turkey Cannon also works wonders in your conventional oven.

    9. Find our estimated cooking times here to know how long your turkey will take to cook. Remember to always measure by internal temperature rather than cooking time. The turkey breast should reach 165° F.

    10. As soon as the turkey reaches the desired temperature, remove it from the heat and tent it (cover with foil) for about 20 minutes. You can also place it in a cooler for up to 2 hours. This will keep it warm and will allow the juices to absorb back into the meat.

    Ready for the Holidays

Are you ready to see how this strange kitchen contraption can take your Thanksgiving to the next level? Forget dry, bland turkey that takes all day to cook—get yourself a Turkey Cannon today.

  • How to Bake in Cast Iron (It's Not as Scary as You Think)

Let’s be real for a minute: your pie is only as good as its crust. You can have the most exquisite fruit or custard filling, but if your pie crust is just so-so, the flavor falls flat. Luckily, we have a simple way for you to step up your pie or bread game this Thanksgiving.

    Three words—cast iron bakeware.

Rolls in a Cast Iron Pan

Now, you may already have a cast iron skillet or Dutch oven on which you would stake your life. You already know about the amazing possibilities of sautéing, searing, and even braising in your cast iron cookware. But have you tried your hand at baking yet? We’ve rounded up some of our best cast iron baking tips, so your Thanksgiving pies will turn out with perfect, golden crusts for everyone to enjoy.

    • Be sure your cast iron bakeware is well seasoned just like your skillet or Dutch oven. This will help prevent food from sticking (which is especially important for baking!).

    • Melt a little bit of butter and brown sugar in the bottom of your pie pan before baking for an extra buttery, sweet crust.

    • Use a rubber pot holder like this to protect your table from the hot cast iron after it comes out of the oven.

    • If there is leftover pie, try not to store it in your cast iron dish. The acid in the food might damage your seasoning if left for too long.

    • Cast iron will keep your bread or pie warmer for longer, so plan cooling times accordingly.

    • Preheat your pan for cornbread, biscuits, or muffins if you’d like an especially crispy crust. For pies and cakes, start with a room temperature pan.

    • If your original recipe doesn’t factor in cast iron baking, check your bread or pie about 10 minutes sooner than what is suggested. This is to ensure your food doesn’t burn from the higher, more consistent heat of cast iron.

    • Follow this guide for cleaning up your cast iron after you’re finished baking.

  • What the Heck is a Stove System?

    More than Just a Stove

For over 25 years, we’ve been designing a better way to cook outdoors. Over all this time, we’ve made a huge variety of outdoor cooking gear. But our staple product from the start has been our propane camp stoves. Obviously, their rugged, durable design has a lot to do with their popularity; other features like powerful burners, removable legs, and matchless ignition have also had a hand in keeping our classic stoves at the top of the industry. However, there is one thing about our stoves that truly steals the show: they aren’t stoves.

Okay, so they are stoves in the literal sense. But they aren’t just stoves. We created the stove system to fulfill all of your outdoor cooking needs. Our armada of accessories alongside each of our stoves makes it so that you can enjoy all your favorite meals outdoors just as easily as you enjoy them indoors—all one cooker. How does that work? Let us explain.

    Choose Your System

More than just a stoveFlat top griddle, BBQ grill box, Artisan outdoor ovenAt Camp Chef, we have two separate cooking systems: 14-inch and 16-inch. You will often see these numbers on our stoves and accessories to show you to which system each product belongs. The measurements refer to the depth of the stove (front to back). Our 14-inch system includes mainly two-burner stoves and accessories with a 14-inch depth; our 16-inch system includes mainly three-burner stoves and accessories with a 16-inch depth. Starting to make sense?

Now, why the different systems? One of our priorities at Camp Chef is offering you a better way to cook where and what you want, for however many people you have in your group. Some outdoor chefs like to keep things simple with two burners and two accessories, or a single large accessory. On the other hand, many others love having a third burner for an extra accessory to open up their cooking options.

    Mix and Match Accessories

After you’ve decided on the size of your system, it’s time to add your choice of stove accessories. To give you the freedom to cook what you want, we offer a variety of accessories, including BBQ boxes, outdoor ovens, griddles, Dutch ovens, skillets, and more.

Our professional grill boxes are awesome for grilling veggies, kabobs, burgers, brats, and more. They feature cast iron grill grates, so you can even sear your meat.

As you might expect, our outdoor ovens are perfect for baking pizza wherever you go. However, you can also bake cookies, brownies, open-faced sandwiches, and even meat.

Our griddles come pre-seasoned, so they’re ready to cook as soon as you are. They are among the most versatile of cooking accessories. You can make bacon, stir fry, eggs, pancakes, burgers, and more all on one surface.

Dutch ovens and skillets—or any of our other cast iron accessories—are the Swiss army knife of your stovetop accessories. They can do so much. Baking, frying, searing…the list goes on. All of our cast iron pieces are pre-seasoned, so there’s no hassle after you take it out of the box.

By mixing and matching all of these products, there is almost no limit to what you can make for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Seriously. Imagine bacon and eggs in the morning, pizza at lunch, and philly cheese steak sandwiches for dinner—all from a single stove.

That’s what our stove systems are all about.

    Cook What You Want

With so much cooking power and flexibility, you can cook what you love to eat no matter where you are. We’ve compiled a small list of our top recipe picks, all of which you can make using you 14-inch or 16-inch system. If you have other ideas, let us know in the comments.

    • Spicy Grilled Shrimp Kabobs • Chocolate Pumpkin Skillet Brownies • Stuffed Venison Backstrap • Finger-Lickin’ Fried Chicken • Pina Colada Burger • Deep Fried Oreos • Artisan Margherita Pizza

You’ve got the information, you’ve got the recipes, now get out there and start cooking. Choose your dream stove system today.
