When the weather gets warm and the garden gets full of mature fruits and vegetables it is time to reap the benefits of a hard summers work.  Enjoying some of natures fresh and crisp garden goodness straight off of the vine is a rewarding experience.  Fresh garden salsa, a timeless favorite, has an amazing flavor when you know that just hours before, the savory tomatoes and peppers were soaking in nutrients and vitamins from the moist soil.

This is also to perfect time to get ready for canning the excess and enjoy the fruits of your summer labor all winter long.  Canning produce as soon as possible after it is picked is essential to maintaining high levels of nutrients and flavor.  The worldwide web provides a rich source for canning instructions, ideas and tips.

Many Camp Chef employees participate in canning each year and have found several benefits from using camp stoves to improve the canning process.  First and foremost, it is already hot in most regions during harvest time and nobody wants to increase the temperature in their home.  Especially when there is a lot of canning to be done.  Moving the heat outdoors with a camp stove helps keep your kitchen at a cool and comfortable temperature to prepare your fruits and vegetables.

Canning Stoves

Big Gas CanningAny Camp Chef three burner stove will provide plenty of cooking space to really expedite the canning process.  Multiple pots at different temperatures will help maintain specific cooking needs of the various types of foods being canned.  Convenient side shelves are extremely helpful where bottles and canning utinsels are concerned.  If side shelves are not included on a stove, they can easily be added by using the "build a custom package" button found on each stoves page.

Each year we receive several inquiries about which stove should be used for canning.  The truth is, almost all of our stoves, with the exception of those that are listed as High or Maximum Output (ie. EX280LW), are excellent for canning.  The deciding factor truly becomes the number of burners you will need based on the quantity of canning to be done.

Canned Jams and Fruit Jellies

On the Rise

Home-canning seems to have skipped one or two generations, but is now on the rise. People are finding that this method of food preservation can bring peace of mind as well as great tasting and inexpensive fruits and vegetables to the table during the non-growing seasons.

Canning today is an art that both men and women are practicing regardless of whether they live in the city or country. Fresh ingredients can be found almost anywhere. Providing fresh-tasting, home canned food to your friends and family throughout the year rewards your efforts when proper steps for handling and processing your food are taken.  It is highly recommended to follow the manufacturers instructions for your bottles, pots and pressure cookers.
