We tried something a little different in the Camp Chef kitchen for this recipe. We took your regular french toast and made it amazing. Who would have thought by simply adding cereal and the most amazing berry compote every, would elevate this french toast.
Crunchy French Toast
- Loaf of French bread
- 8 eggs
- 1/3 C. milk
- Pinch of salt
- 1 t. vanilla
- Cereal – We used Honey Bunches of Oats but anything similar will work
|Cut the French bread at a slight angle.|
|Beat the eggs and milk together in a flat container.|
|Add some salt and the vanilla to the egg mixture.|
Put enough cereal in another flat pan to cover the bottom, use the bottom of a glass to crush the cereal a bit.
|Turn the burners on medium high to pre-heat the griddle. We used the CGG24B and placed it on the front and back burners of our kitchen gas stove.|
|Put some butter on the griddle to prevent sticking.|
|Dip each slice of French bread in the egg mixture and then the crushed cereal, place on the griddle. You will be able to fit six slices at a time. Turn the burners down to medium heat.|
|Cook for a few minutes on each side and serve with powder sugar, maple syrup or berry compote and whip cream. (see recipe below)|
- 16 oz frozen mixed berries
- 1/3 C. Sugar
- 1 T. cornstarch
|Put the frozen berries in a sauce pan or skillet with a little water in the bottom.|
|Cook on Medium heat until fruit cooks down into a sauce, about 15-20 minutes.|
|Add sugar and stir until dissolved.|
|Dissolve cornstarch in a little cold water, maybe ¼ C.|
Add to berries and stir until berry sauce thickens.
|This berry compote is good served on just about any dessert. It’s great on pancakes and French toast and we love it on vanilla ice cream!|
