Reading Cee Dub

A few weeks back I was traveling and caught a morning news discussion about news papers going more and more to on-line. They had created some new gadget that looked a bit like a mini lap top that allowed you to read your paper. The discussion ensued about which anchor person liked it and why or why not. Some felt that picking up the morning paper and a cup was a historic ritual to not be discarded. Some felt that the little gadget was the “green” move to make (ok, less tree use, renewable that they are… vs. oil bi products for the plastic housings of the new gadget, non renewable. A discussion for another day)

Here is my take on it. How about we slow down, sip the coffee, smell the roses and read something on paper. It recently occurred to me that we are possibly in the mess we are in, in this country, because we move too fast without the proper calculations. While it is true you are reading this on a plastic sort of device. And while it is true you can read slowly here. Let’s see you mark it up for a return for reference. I guess you can cut and past a file. But try to make a scrap book out of that. And for those of you who fly. Just what are you going to be doing sitting on the plane as they prepare for take off and all electronic devices are to be turned off and stowed if it all goes electronic? There is something about a good book and completing the reading there of, the loaning and sharing there of, and the adding to ones library that will be difficult to achieve with the electronic reading device.

Early this morning I discovered that the book fairy had been in my truck. On the blow by headed south to business in Texas; the Welch’s in the “wee hours” of the morning stopped and dropped off some books and picked up the goodies my daughter left for the jolly old elves. I’d heard for the past two months about the new book and now I had one! Well, the family had one. While waiting to get my oil changed on the way to work, I began to devour Cee Dub’s latest penning.

Gather ‘Round the Table. This is not just a cook book full of the how to cook something in a Dutch oven. Oh, that is there too, but it is laced with stories related to adventures of cooking that are told only as Cee Dub can tell them. The chapter titled: Three Guys in the Kitchen is as truthful as can be legally repeated in print. I know because a few years back I had the chance to work with Herb Good and Hobart Man in just that setting at the sports show he mentions. If you want to convert kitchen pan recipes to the Dutch oven, gain Sour Dough knowledge, or considered making your own sausages it is all in this book. This may be Butch and Penny’s best work, yet. I’m still waiting for Cee Dub to write a book titled: Old Game Wardens…What Every License Holder Should Know. But for now I’ll finish this one up with a cup, turning the pages as one should, add it to the library and then put on a few pounds as I dog ear it over time.
